The Queensland Rugby League plans to make the Frank Fisher Cup an annual event alternating every year between different towns and Cherbourg.<\/p>\n

Central Division chairman Danny McGuire, speaking during the finals held at Cherbourg last weekend, said he expected next year’s event would be held in Toowoomba.<\/p>\n

It could then return to Cherbourg, before being offered to Rockhampton.<\/p>\n

Indigenous teams from the four corners of the Central Division –\u00a0Sunshine Coast Bunyas, Wide Bay Stingrays,\u00a0Central Queensland Barramundis and\u00a0South West Emus – contested the inaugural competition which was named in honour of legendary Cherbourg footballer Frank Fisher.<\/p>\n

Frank’s daughter, Cherbourg Elder Aunty Lillian Gray, presented the trophy to the winning team, the Wide Bay Stingrays (see scores, below).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aunty Lillian said she was very proud of her father, who outside Cherbourg is probably best known as Cathy Freeman’s grandfather.<\/p>\n

“He was born in 1904 and was sent here with his two brothers and his mum and dad,” she said.<\/p>\n

Frank fathered 15 children and played rugby league into his 50s.<\/p>\n

“It’s great to see all these young people still interested in rugby league. It’s the greatest game of all!” Aunty Lillian said.<\/p>\n

The weekend of league kicked off with an Under 16s game between a combined Cherbourg \/ Murgon team and the Kingaroy Red Ants (see separate report<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Also unveiled on Saturday was the Queensland Rugby League’s\u00a0Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which was explained to players by the chairman of the QRL’s Indigenous Advisory Committee, Edward Monaei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
