South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff faces a challenger in Division 5<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff won’t be having it all her own way this time at the upcoming Council election.<\/p>\n

Murgon resident Colleen Bird announced on Monday she will be standing for Division 5.<\/p>\n

Colleen, who was born in Cherbourg, is the first Indigenous candidate to put up her hand for the South Burnett Regional Council.<\/p>\n

Cr Duff secured 54.47 per cent of the vote against three challengers at the 2008 council poll – the first after amalgamation – but then was elected unopposed at the 2012 and 2016 elections.<\/p>\n

Candidates for the Local Government elections have until noon on Tuesday (March 3) to nominate for the March 28 poll.<\/p>\n

Lists of candidates who have nominated so far are available on the Electoral Commission of Queensland website.<\/p>\n

As at 8:25am, Monday, a number of people who have publicly stated they are contesting the election were not yet appearing on the official lists.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the South Burnett, this included two mayoral candidates – Brett Otto and Toni Ralph –\u00a0 Division 3 hopeful Rhonda Trivett and Division 6 candidate Colleen Bird.<\/p>\n

There are also some familiar names missing so far on the list of candidates for Cherbourg Council, including sitting mayor Arnold Murray.<\/p>\n

UPDATE:<\/b> There is actually a second Indigenous candidate running for the SBRC in the 2020 poll. Division 3 candidate Rhonda Trivett identifies as Barkindji.<\/p>\n

Footnote: southburnett.com.au will be running brief profiles of all SBRC, Cherbourg and Division 6 GRC councillors ahead of the election.<\/em><\/p>\n
