{"id":253803,"date":"2020-02-28T15:26:20","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T05:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=253803"},"modified":"2020-07-12T16:47:04","modified_gmt":"2020-07-12T06:47:04","slug":"plan-unveiled-to-improve-health-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/02\/28\/plan-unveiled-to-improve-health-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Plan Unveiled To Improve Health Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_143946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143946\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/20160505petergillies.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-143946\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/20160505petergillies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/20160505petergillies.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/20160505petergillies-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Darling Downs Health chief executive Dr Peter Gillies with Darling Downs Health Board chairman<br \/>Mike Horan (Photo: DDHHS)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>February 28, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new plan to improve access to mental health, suicide prevention and drug treatment services in the local region has been developed by the Darling Downs and West Moreton Primary Health Network (PHN).<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Regional Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug Plan&#8221; was officially launched in Ipswich last week.<\/p>\n<p>The Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN covers the South Burnett, Cherbourg, Toowoomba, Western Downs, Somerset, Goondiwindi, Southern Downs, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Ipswich council areas.<\/p>\n<p>The new plan aims to integrate care across the health system to improve services for individuals, carers and families affected by a mental health problems, alcohol and other drug use, and suicide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It also aims to reduce stigma for people accessing the care they need.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PHN is committed to collaborating with Darling Downs Health and West Moreton Health to ensure that all people living with a mental health condition and alcohol and other drug use in our region can access effective and appropriate treatment,\u201d Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN CEO Merrilyn Strohfeldt said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Darling Downs Health chief executive Dr Peter Gillies said the plan would lay the foundation for future co-ordination and integration of care for people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than 100 representatives from a wide range of organisations\u00a0 participated in consultations and workshops to identify key issues and develop priorities for the plan.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Some facts from the\u00a0Regional Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drug Plan:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The PHN region spans 95,639sq km and has a population of 558,803, including\u00a024,549 people who\u00a0identify as Aboriginal\u00a0and\/or Torres Strait Islander<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Darling Downs Health services about 280,200 people in the\u00a0local government areas\u00a0of Cherbourg, Goondiwindi,\u00a0South Burnett, Southern Downs,\u00a0Toowoomba, Western Downs and a<br \/>\nsmall portion of Banana<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Around a third (31.4 per cent) of the Darling\u00a0Downs and West Moreton PHN population\u00a0falls within the most disadvantaged\u00a0quintile (compared with 20 per cent for\u00a0Queensland).\u00a0Areas with a high\u00a0proportion of the population in the\u00a0most disadvantaged quintile include\u00a0Riverview (100 per cent) and Nanango (91.0 per cent)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>6.4 per cent of the PHN\u00a0population (32,811 people) live\u00a0with a profound or severe disability (compared with\u00a05.4 per cent for Queensland)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Deaths from suicide\u00a0and self-inflicted injury in the PHN occurred at an\u00a0average annual standardised rate of\u00a015.5 per 100,000 (2011-2015) compared\u00a0with 14.1 for Queensland\u00a0and 11.5 for Australia.\u00a0The PHN region is ranked 5th highest in Australia.
