The Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE is giving South Burnett residents the opportunity this month to gain the safety qualifications needed to obtain a job in the mining industry. <\/p>\n

The Generic Induction Safety Program is being offered at the Kingaroy campus, and there are still a few vacancies open.<\/p>\n

SQIT mining teacher Jason Leech said many people do the program before they apply for a job with a mining company as their investment in the program demonstrates their commitment to a career in the mining industry.<\/p>\n

“The course covers safety for the workplace, including surface and underground operations, and is designed to provide resource industry workers with core risk assessment and safety skills before undertaking a site-specific induction,” Mr Leech said.<\/p>\n

“People who have completed the three-day program are demonstrating a commitment to a career in mining as it is a legislative requirement to complete the course before working in the industry.”<\/p>\n

The program provides participants with an introduction to the industry, safety hazards, tagging and permits, traffic flow and rules, emergency response and basic first aid. <\/p>\n

The program is Standard 11 compliant, and meets the generic induction requirements of the Kinetic Group, a skills adviser to the resource sector. <\/p>\n

On successful completion of the theory program, participants will be issued with a log book which requires sign off in industry before a New Entrants Skills Passport can be issued. <\/p>\n

The program has an age entry requirement of 18 years and above.<\/p>\n

The course is running May 16-18 at the Kingaroy Campus.<\/p>\n
