{"id":253173,"date":"2020-02-18T14:35:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T04:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=253173"},"modified":"2020-02-18T15:17:42","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T05:17:42","slug":"councils-miss-out-on-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/02\/18\/councils-miss-out-on-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Councils &#8216;Miss Out On Funding&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_203760\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-203760\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cameron-dick-200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-203760\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cameron-dick-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cameron-dick-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/cameron-dick-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-203760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minister Cameron Dick<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>February 18, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Toowoomba, Gympie and Somerset councils are among nine bushfire-affected regions which have missed out on $1 million Federal bushfire recovery grants, according to the State Government.<\/p>\n<p>Bushfires stretched resources in the three regions late last year.<\/p>\n<p>During November, fires raged in the Biarra and Redbank Creek areas, along Esk-Hampton and Esk-Crows Nest roads and in the Deongwar State Forest.<\/p>\n<p>A large fire burning near Pechey \/ Ravensbourne sparked evacuations.<\/p>\n<p>There were also large fires near Jimna, Mt Stanley, Avoca Vale, Monsildale, Upper Kandanga, Woolooga, Booubyjan, Black Snake, Thornside and Widgee.<\/p>\n<p>Cameron Dick, the Minister responsible for the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, said Prime Minister Scott Morrison&#8217;s decision to refuse funding for the nine councils, while increasing grants to councils that had already received a $1 million grant, was absurd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncreasing the grants from $1 million to up to $1.3 million is a welcome boost for the five Queensland communities and other Australian communities that the Prime Minister deemed fit to receive the grant,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHowever, it\u2019s absolutely devastating for the other nine Queensland communities that have also been left ravaged by the Queensland bushfires.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The other council areas which the State Government says missed out on recovery grants are Bundaberg, the Gold Coast, Gladstone, Ipswich, the Lockyer Valley and Redlands.<\/p>\n<p>The five councils which received extra funding were\u00a0Livingstone, Noosa, the Scenic Rim, Southern Downs and the Sunshine Coast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the day the Prime Minister initially announced these $1 million grants \u2013 without any consultation with the States \u2013 we have been advocating for the other nine Queensland councils impacted by the Eastern and Southern bushfires to also receive the grant,&#8221; Mr Dick said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote directly to the Prime Minister to ask him to extend the $1 million to the additional communities and until now, there has been silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce again, the Prime Minister\u2019s decision has been made with no engagement, no consultation and a complete lack of understanding of the impacts on Queensland communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is clearly a decision made by the Commonwealth in Canberra based on some desktop-derived formula.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Local Government Association of Queensland CEO Greg Hallam said Queensland councils deserved equal treatment and a fair go.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Morrison Government should not be playing favourites with disaster-hit communities,\u201d Mr Hallam said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQueenslanders deserve better than that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commonwealth collects 80 per cent of all taxes.
