{"id":252660,"date":"2020-02-12T17:14:26","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T07:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=252660"},"modified":"2020-02-13T20:32:50","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T10:32:50","slug":"curran-to-re-stand-as-gympie-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/02\/12\/curran-to-re-stand-as-gympie-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Curran To Re-Stand As Gympie Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_97097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97097\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97097\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150121-mick-curran-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150121-mick-curran-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150121-mick-curran-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gympie Mayor Mick Curran<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>February 12, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gympie Mayor Mick Curran announced on Wednesday he will stand for re-election as Mayor at the March 28 local government elections.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Curran, 53, was first elected to Gympie Regional Council in 2012 as a councillor for Division 7.<\/p>\n<p>He was appointed Mayor in December 2014 after former Mayor Ron Dyne resigned due to health reasons, and re-elected as Mayor in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to becoming a Councillor, Mr Curran was a policeman in Brisbane, Roma and Gympie, where he was promoted to sergeant and made District Crime Manager.<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife Sue, a school teacher, have three children aged 22, 20 and 15 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In his most recent weekly column, Mayor Curran said the up-coming elections were important because they gave the community an opportunity to select the candidate they wanted to lead the management of their community for the next four years. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would urge all residents to do their research on all candidates and get to know who they will be casting their vote for,&#8221; Mayor Curran said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would also urge residents to heed the old saying \u2018actions speak louder than words\u2019.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Curran warned that being a Mayor or Councillor was not an easy task.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Difficult decisions need to be made which will draw the ire of some while benefitting the majority,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You will be subjected to much more scrutiny and gossip than your family and friends will ever be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You will be required to adhere to stringent laws, policies and procedures which you may not have been required to previously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the upside, Councillors could represent their communities and have a say in delivering services, projects and infrastructure for the benefit of the wider community and the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Current councillors, over this term of council, should be proud of their contributions,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wish each and every resident who nominates to lead this community at the forthcoming elections all the very best.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Footnote:<\/strong> Sitting South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell and Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio have both announced their intention to stand for re-election on March 28.
