{"id":248749,"date":"2019-11-20T13:55:13","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T03:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=248749"},"modified":"2019-11-20T13:57:27","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T03:57:27","slug":"mp-updated-on-swine-fever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2019\/11\/20\/mp-updated-on-swine-fever\/","title":{"rendered":"MP Updated On Swine Fever"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_170025\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170025\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-170025\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Agriculture Minister Mark Furner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>November 20, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Agriculture Minister\u00a0Mark Furner has had a second meeting with the\u00a0African Swine Fever &#8211; Queensland Awareness and Action Forum\u00a0to review the State&#8217;s preparedness should the deadly pig disease be detected in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI first met with the forum members in October when I committed to continuing engagement on this emergent and critical biosecurity threat,&#8221; Mr Furner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date, we have provided Queensland veterinarians, pig owners, pig farm workers, feral pig hunters, industry and the general community with information about African Swine Fever, the risks of introduction and how they can help prevent it as part of our shared approach to preparedness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll pig owners, whether they are commercial farmers, hobby farmers, pet owners or those who come into contact with pigs, including feral pigs must also play their part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPig owners must be registered as a biosecurity entity, which helps Biosecurity Queensland respond in the event of an emergency animal, pest or disease incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Producers can check their contact and registration details are up-to-date at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.qld.gov.au\/BiosecurityRegistration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qld.gov.au\/BiosecurityRegistration<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Minister Furner said the State Government had scaled up its efforts including:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased education and awareness across potential pathways of introduction such as food outlets that may give leftovers to pig owners, people buying pork products from overseas, and feral pig hunters who might see something unusual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhancing laboratory diagnostic capacity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting industry to boost biosecurity measures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Providing more than 4000 registered biosecurity entities in Queensland that keep at least one pig with information about prevention and preparedness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mr Furner said the greatest risk was from people illegally bringing pork or pork products into Australia from overseas and these being fed to or eaten by pigs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent detections of African Swine Fever virus fragments in meat confiscated at Australian airports and mail centres highlight the serious risk of entry through passenger movements and mail,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge everyone to make sure they know what can and can\u2019t be brought into Australia and comply with these requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile prevention is the key, we have to be ready in the event this disease does arrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn its most severe form, up to 100 per cent of pigs may be affected and die.
