Maidenwell barrel racers Michael and Karli Sanford have enjoyed an exciting few days at the National Barrel Horse Association world championships in the United States, with Karli earning a place in the final.<\/p>\n

The championships were held in Perry, Georgia, from October 27 to November 2.<\/p>\n

It was the couple’s first trip to the world championships.<\/p>\n

They earned the right to compete after collecting points in competitions around south-east Queensland.<\/p>\n

Michael told southburnett.com.au<\/strong> he picked up a third place in the Open Men’s category but didn’t make it through to the finals.<\/p>\n

However, Karli made it through every round and competed in the Grand Final on Sunday against the best riders in the world for a chance at the world champion title.<\/p>\n

Riding “JTD A Sharp Streaker” – a borrowed horse – Karli finished in 11th spot, just outside the prize money with a time of 17.272. This was less than half a second behind the winner who came from Florida.<\/p>\n

Speaking to a US TV interviewer after the race, Karli said it had been “one helluva ride”.<\/p>\n

“It’s been absolutely amazing trying to ride different horses,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It’s an experience I will never forget.”<\/p>\n

She said it was daunting competing on a horse she had never seen before, but the US horses were “absolutely amazing” and the trainers had been a great support.<\/p>\n

“It’s been fantastic,” she said.<\/p>\n
