South Burnett Regional Council has agreed to name an access road in Manyung after a dairying family.<\/p>\n

At last week’s Council meeting, Councillors were told an application had been received to name a road in a small rural subdivision after the Koy family.<\/p>\n

The Koys moved from Boonah to Manyung in September 1930 to set up a dairy farm that also ran cattle and pigs.<\/p>\n

One brother – Harold – left the farm to join the Navy in 1937.<\/p>\n

He served on the HMAS Parramatta where he was killed in action in the Mediterranean on November 27, 1941. Harold’s name is listed on Murgon’s War Memorial and the Commemorative Wall at the Australian War Memorial.<\/p>\n

Another brother, Frank, married Joyce Rose from Tingoora and the couple bought a farm in the Manyung area near the original family farm.<\/p>\n

Frank and Joyce\u2019s son, Darryl and their two daughters, Sheryl and Phenella, attended the former Manyung School, which closed in 1963.<\/p>\n

Sheryl and Phenella went on to complete high school while Darryl left after Grade 8 to work on the family farm.<\/p>\n

He later went to work at the Wide Bay-Burnett Electricity Board (now known as Ergon).<\/p>\n

The Koys retired from farming to Murgon in December 1965.<\/p>\n

Darryl and his wife Lyn still live in Murgon and are active volunteers in the community.<\/p>\n

Councillors were told the Manyung subdivision was completed approximately 10 years ago but survey plans for it had only recently been completed and approved. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The road in question is a cul-de-sac that intersects with Hetheringtons Road, and is the access point for six internal subdivision allotments.<\/p>\n

Officers advised naming the road Koy Close conformed with Council’s policy on road names.<\/p>\n

The Mayor and Divisional Councillor (Cr Duff) had both been consulted, and Cr Duff had also canvassed the issue at a recent business breakfast in Murgon where no objections were raised.<\/p>\n
