AgForce is calling for Queensland councils to increase their travel and agistment permit fees to allow more maintenance to be done on the State’s vital stock route network.<\/p>\n

AgForce Cattle Board director and Cloncurry grazier Peter Hall said access fees covered just 4 per cent of the costs of maintaining the network with the shortfall being met by local councils.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is clearly unsatisfactory and unsustainable. It places an unfair impost on councils and general ratepayers,\u201d\u00a0Mr Hall said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgForce is pushing strongly for a system in which the stock route network pays for itself via user access costs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not about raising fees to prevent access to the network \u2013 quite the opposite.<\/p>\n

“This is about ensuring fees are fair and reasonable to maintain the network for generations to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current fees were set decades ago and are so low that they encourage poor behaviour and misuse of the stock routes merely for grazing rather than for the intended purpose of transit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t allow local governments to recoup the actual costs associated with managing the network, let alone undertaking remediation or improvements.\u201d<\/p>\n

AgForce, the Local Government Association of Queensland and drovers are participating in a review of the fees and strategy being undertaken by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe commend the collaborative and consultative approach DNRME have taken to review the Stock Route Management Regulation 2003 and the Stock Route Network Strategy,\u201d Mr Hall said.<\/p>\n

The Department held a series of workshops with stakeholders in Longreach, Roma, Emerald and Kingaroy with the recommendations from these events being considered at a final workshop in Brisbane.<\/p>\n

Mr Hall said the workshops reached a general agreement that:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Major stock routes should primarily be managed for travelling stock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Further guidance provided to users as to when slow moving stock are permitted on the network<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Travel and agistment permit fees should be increased<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Application fees should be charged for travelling stock and agistment and directed back into the network.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Mr Hall said Queensland\u2019s stock route network was an amazing and unique asset which needed to be protected.<\/p>\n

          \u201cAgForce has been fighting for decades for a fair and equitable mechanism for all stakeholders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
