{"id":244930,"date":"2019-09-24T19:54:12","date_gmt":"2019-09-24T09:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=244930"},"modified":"2020-07-16T16:16:08","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T06:16:08","slug":"alert-warns-producers-to-stay-vigilant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2019\/09\/24\/alert-warns-producers-to-stay-vigilant\/","title":{"rendered":"Alert Warns Producers To Stay Vigilant"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_112721\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112721\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150701feral.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-112721\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150701feral.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150701feral.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150701feral-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150701feral-263x163.jpg 263w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150701feral-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150701feral-285x177.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">African swine fever will infect feral pigs as well as domesticated stock &#8230; it is important to prevent contact between wild and farmed pigs (Photo: DEPI)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>September 24, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biosecurity Queensland is warning pig owners to remain vigilant for African swine fever as the serious disease continues to spread across Eastern Europe, Russia and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is free from African swine fever so far, but Biosecurity Queensland has warned that diseases do not respect national borders.<\/p>\n<p>People cannot be infected but African swine fever can have a very high mortality rate in infected pigs and no vaccine or treatment is available.<\/p>\n<p>If it became established in Australia, African swine fever would be difficult to eradicate and would significantly impact pig health and production.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation issued a Biosecurity Alert about African swine fever on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Pigs can become infected by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eating contaminated pork products and feed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Close contact with infected pigs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Contact with contaminated equipment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The greatest risk of introduction is from people illegally bringing pork or pork products into Australia from overseas and the products being fed to pigs. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Australia does not import fresh pork and the Federal Government has strengthened requirements for importing pork products from countries with African swine fever.<\/p>\n<p>The spread of African swine fever has also been linked to domestic and feral pigs eating food intended for humans.<\/p>\n<p>Never feed pigs food or food scraps (swill) containing animal matter such as meat, meat products and eggs.
