{"id":241268,"date":"2019-08-07T17:43:26","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T07:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=241268"},"modified":"2022-06-08T12:28:40","modified_gmt":"2022-06-08T02:28:40","slug":"inquiry-opens-into-nuclear-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2019\/08\/07\/inquiry-opens-into-nuclear-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Inquiry Opens Into Nuclear Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_41380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41380\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41380\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ken-odowd-200.jpg\" alt=\"Ken O'Dowd\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ken-odowd-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ken-odowd-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Member for Flynn Ken O&#8217;Dowd<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>August 7, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>by Anne Miller<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A push by some Federal LNP politicians for nuclear power to be put back on the table as a possible solution for Australia&#8217;s energy needs has paid off.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives Standing Committee on the Environment and Energy has begun an inquiry into the prerequisites for nuclear energy in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Committee chairman, LNP Member for Fairfax Ted O\u2019Brien, said on Wednesday a fresh look at nuclear energy was timely, given that new technologies in the field were leading to cleaner, safer and more efficient energy production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nuclear energy has evolved since it was last seriously considered in Australia,&#8221; Mr O\u2019Brien said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This inquiry will provide the opportunity to establish whether nuclear energy would be feasible and suitable for Australia in the future, taking into account both expert opinions and community views.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The committee looks forward to receiving and carefully considering all perspectives on its terms of reference.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The State LNP has ruled out a nuclear future for Queensland.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, the State LNP do not support a nuclear power station in Queensland,\u201d Opposition Leader and Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington told <strong>southburnett.com.au<\/strong> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>And Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Mander was equally adamant when speaking to reporters last week: &#8220;I can categorically state that the State LNP has ruled out any investment in any nuclear power station.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will not happen in Queensland under an LNP government,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This position is at odds with the public stance taken by some Federal Coalition MPs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>LNP Member for Flynn Ken O&#8217;Dowd &#8211; one of the three Federal MPs that represent slices of the South Burnett &#8211; has been a strong advocate for an inquiry into nuclear energy.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Federal Parliament on\u00a0July 29, Mr O&#8217;Dowd said the debate had to start.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My opinion is that nuclear has to be debated. It&#8217;ll take 20 years to build a nuclear power station and so the debate must start sooner rather than later,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All those deniers out there should think about just where we are going. Renewables have a place, and I admit that. However, nuclear has to be considered for future generation of cheap, reliable and affordable power in Australia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answering an interjection, Mr O&#8217;Dowd said: &#8220;Yes, put it anywhere you like. My area would accept it. Not a problem.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a media release on Tuesday, Mr O&#8217;Dowd said he had been &#8220;copping some flak&#8221; about his push for an inquiry into nuclear energy however he considered it an \u201cobligation to his constituents and business operators\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all under a cloud of misconceptions that nuclear power is unstable after the very publicised Chernobyl and Fukushima occurrences,&#8221; Mr O&#8217;Dowd said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today\u2019s nuclear energy is safer, more reliable and affordable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are currently 50 countries around the world using nuclear power from 450 nuclear reactors. Australia has 40 per cent of the world&#8217;s uranium and providing the technology is there, why not?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The House of Representatives Standing Committee will look at the necessary circumstances and requirements for any future government\u2019s consideration of nuclear energy generation, including using small modular reactor technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It will consider a range of matters including waste management, health and safety, environmental impacts, energy affordability and reliability, economic feasibility and workforce capability, security implications, community engagement and national consensus.<\/p>\n<p>Submissions to the inquiry will be accepted until September 16.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Two potential sites in the South Burnett for a nuclear reactor were suggested in a paper published online earlier this year by a pro-nuclear lobby group,\u00a0the Australian Nuclear Association.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The maps highlighted potential sites in Queensland and NSW located close to existing electricity grid infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The Queensland sites included Tarong, currently the location of two coal-fired power stations; and Woolooga, the site of several proposed solar energy developments.<\/p>\n<p>However, for Tarong to have a nuclear future, the existing power station would have to be demolished and rebuilt from scratch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At a Stanwell update earlier this year, Tarong site manager Brad Perry told a questioner the station could not be converted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And he pointed out that the best place for a nuclear power station was closer to the water for cooling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nuclear is probably on the same decline across the world as what coal is,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not cheaper. It&#8217;s easier to produce but the cost that goes into your maintenance and operations, and just the building of the plant, is astronomical.
