Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio this week launched the 2019 Mayor\u2019s Telstra Innovation Awards.<\/p>\n

Mayor Antonio said the awards highlighted the importance of science, technology, engineering and maths subjects.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Innovation Awards have been renamed this year to broaden the focus from just technology to innovation,\u201d Mayor Antonio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe awards are open to secondary students in Years 9 to 12 across the Toowoomba Region with the purpose of encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, helping students to unlock their problem-solving potential and take their big technology ideas to the next level.<\/p>\n

\u201cCouncil is grateful to be partnering with Telstra, TAFE Queensland, USQ and TSBE for the awards this year with $10,000 in prizes up for grabs, including an exclusive guided tour of Telstra\u2019s Customer Insight Centre in Sydney for the winning team.<\/p>\n

\u201cA single idea can change the world. I am confident that our students have the ability and the ingenuity to make a difference and play a major role in \u2018the next big thing\u2019, whatever field it is in.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLast year\u2019s inaugural winner, Toowoomba Christian College, came up with an idea of a smart-watch designed to help young people manage and monitor their anxiety.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe possibilities are endless and that\u2019s what makes these awards so exciting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look forward to seeing what creative ideas and innovations our region\u2019s students can create together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Entries opened on July 22.<\/p>\n

The Innovation Awards consist of two separate competition phases in Terms 3 and 4 of the 2019 school year, as well as a Final Pitch and Presentation Night.<\/p>\n
