{"id":239574,"date":"2019-07-12T17:58:42","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T07:58:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=239574"},"modified":"2020-07-19T13:09:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-19T03:09:21","slug":"visit-shares-tales-old-and-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2019\/07\/12\/visit-shares-tales-old-and-new\/","title":{"rendered":"Visit Shares Tales Old And New"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_239580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-239580\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/qatsif1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-239580\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/qatsif1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/qatsif1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/qatsif1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-239580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aunty Shirley Law with QATSIF secretariat director Michael Nayler, top row at left, and other QATSIF visitors at The Ration Shed recently (Photo: QATSIF)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>July 12, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) came to Cherbourg recently to visit The Ration Shed and speak to Elders.<\/p>\n<p>QATSIF is a charitable trust which was established in 2009\u00a0to provide eligible Indigenous Queenslanders with scholarships to assist them in their senior years of education.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, it has supported more than 8700 students with their Year 11-12 studies, including 195 young people in the South Burnett.<\/p>\n<p>Uncle Eric Law brought the Cherbourg story to life as he showed the group around The Ration Shed\u2019s displays which explain the history of the former mission and the hardships endured by its residents.<\/p>\n<p>After the tour, local Elders had a chance to hear from some past QATSIF students about their educational journey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The four students who spoke were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Giselle Kilner-Parmenter, the 2019 First Nations Law Student of the Year who is studying law at Bond University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Aidan Train who is in the final year of an engineering degree at USQ after being named as Queensland\u2019s Highest Achieving Indigenous student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Billy Neagle who will work at Deloitte\u00a0Access\u00a0Economics next year after completing his finance degree at QUT, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Janaya Watego, who is studying nursing at QUT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>QATSIF provides two-year scholarships to support students to gain their Queensland Certificate of Education in Years 11 and 12.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Applications under Round 11 of the program are now open and close on August 23.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Current Year 10-11 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can apply for a 2020 scholarship through their schools.<\/p>\n<p>QATSIF patron Cherbourg Elder and Stolen Wages campaigner Aunty Ruth Hegarty has encouraged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to make the most of the opportunities which her and other Elders were denied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo forward! Our reward is to see you succeed in whatever profession you choose.
