Department of Transport and Main Roads data analysed by the RACQ has revealed some of the more obscure road rules that Queensland drivers have been fined for breaking over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n

The analysis revealed 147 people had been caught driving over traffic islands, more than 320 had been fined for having an arm out of the window, and 21 were deemed to have reversed their car further than necessary.<\/p>\n

RACQ spokesperson Clare Hunter said some drivers may not have realised just how risky these behaviours were.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese may be lesser known road rules, but it\u2019s dangerous to drive over a traffic island \u2013 not only could it damage your car, you could also end up in the path of oncoming traffic,\u201d Ms Hunter said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should be about self-preservation here, too.<\/p>\n

“Having limbs hanging outside of a car window is dangerous and you\u2019re breaking the law.<\/p>\n

“If you\u2019re caught, you might lose some money in a fine, but losing your arm in a crash would be worse.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to reversing further than required, this is a no-brainer. Reversing your car is necessary in some instances but you have less view of the road so it\u2019s best to limit it and just know you could be fined for overdoing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Hunter said at least 30 drivers had been given a ticket when their car leaked grease or oil.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your car leaks, it\u2019s a sign something is wrong \u2013 get it checked out or a fine could be the least of your worries,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSimply put, these road rules are there to keep you and other road users safe \u2013 if you break them, prepare to cop a fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

  • Driver or passenger with body part out the car window \u2013 327<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Driving over a traffic island \u2013 147<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Fail to prevent oil or grease dropping on roadway \u2013 35<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Pedestrians who washed or cleaned vehicle windscreens on road \u2013 29<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
