South Burnett Regional Council aims to unveil a new five-year economic development plan in September.

The plan will cover the period 2020-2025 and supersede Council’s current three-year economic development plan.

That plan – adopted in August 2017 – targeted the creation of 3000 new jobs, a 300 per cent increase in tourism and the registration of 30 new patents by August 2020.

On Tuesday, Mayor Keith Campbell said that while Council will “own” the new plan, it would be partnering with the Department of State Development to help achieve its objectives.

Council would seek input from its South Burnett Directions strategic think tank on aspects of the plan’s roll-out.

It would also attempt to align the plan’s objectives with the broader Wide Bay-Burnett Regional Organisation Of Councils’ long-term economic plan for the Wide Bay-Burnett.

The Mayor said the new plan had been under development for several months.

It is expected it will focus on obtaining better water security for the region to encourage the development of more intensive agriculture; improved road infrastructure to ease access for heavy-vehicle transportation; and business attraction strategies.
