Wondai residents who believed they heard shots being fired on Sunday after a vehicle was stolen have been assured by police there were no firearms involved in the incident.<\/p>\n

A police spokesperson said the noises heard were from the vehicle exploding when it was burnt.<\/p>\n

About 10:00pm, thieves stole the vehicle from an address in Scott Street, Wondai.<\/p>\n

Police then received multiple calls about reports of shots fired around Cadell Street.<\/p>\n

They attended and located the stolen vehicle burnt out in the nearby forestry.<\/p>\n

The vehicle theft and destruction followed an earlier incident in Cadell Street, between 8:30pm and 8:55pm, when thieves stole personal items from an unlocked vehicle.<\/p>\n

Investigations into both incidents are continuing.<\/p>\n

Police would like to remind the community to secure vehicles, houses and not leave any valuables in sight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If possible, lock screen doors with keys to prevent the lock being easily unlocked.<\/p>\n

“Offenders are often opportunists and only commit these types of offences because it is easy,” the police spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

The reports of gunshots in Wondai followed widespread gossip on social media about a police incident in Nanango on Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Police have confirmed no gunshots were fired in that incident, either.<\/p>\n

UPDATE May 21: A police spokesman repeated on Tuesday no bullets were fired during the Nanango incident.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

However, he said a “non-lethal round”, most likely a bean bag round, was fired. This is usually fired from either a shotgun or a special launcher that can look like a military-style weapon.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
