Free clinics are being held in the South Burnett this week for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents to receive their annual flu shots.<\/p>\n

The “Tackle Flu Before It Tackles You” clinics will be held on:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Wednesday (May 8) – at\u00a0Cherbourg Hospital<\/strong>\u00a0outside outpatients\u2019 department, from 10:00am to noon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Wednesday (May 8) – at\u00a0Murgon State High School<\/strong> from 1:00pm to 3:00pm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Thursday (May 9) – at\u00a0Kingaroy Hospital<\/strong>\u00a0from 9:30am to noon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Thursday (May 9) – at\u00a0Kingaroy State High School<\/strong> from 1:00pm to 3:00pm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Vaccinations will be provided free for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over.<\/p>\n

          As part of the program, people will receive a shirt designed by St George artist Gordon Lister when they receive their vaccination on the clinic day.<\/p>\n

          Darling Downs Public Health Unit director Dr Penny Hutchinson said annual vaccinations were the best way to remain healthy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \u201cA lot of people don\u2019t realise how serious the flu is and the complications that can occur,\u201d Dr Hutchinson said.<\/p>\n

          \u201cUnfortunately, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community are at a higher risk of developing these complications. The best protection against getting sick is to receive a flu vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n

          Dr Hutchinson also reminded people that you can\u2019t get sick from the flu shot.<\/p>\n

          \u201cIt\u2019s a common myth that the vaccination gives you the flu. This isn\u2019t the case. It won\u2019t make you sick, but it will keep you and your families safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

          \u201cWe are able to vaccinate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over as part of our Tackle Flu clinics,\u201d Dr Hutchinson said.<\/p>\n

          \u201cHowever, we encourage all people to discuss whether vaccination is appropriate for their children with their GP or Aboriginal Medical Service.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
