Despite a huge effort in the second half, the Wondai Wolves fell just short of victory against Murgon in their A Grade rugby league game played at Wondai last Saturday.<\/p>\n

It was the Wondai club’s “gala day”, with many former players returning to watch the on-field action and they weren’t disappointed, with the game decided in the dying seconds.<\/p>\n

At half-time, the Wolves were behind 22-4 and things were looking dire for fans.<\/p>\n

But with the crowd behind them, Wondai overpowered the Mustangs five tries to two in the second half to get within two points of victory, 34-32, with just minutes left on the clock.<\/p>\n

The Wolves then had the opportunity to level the scores when they were awarded a penalty right on full-time.<\/p>\n

They elected to kick but sadly for the home crowd, the attempt was waved away.<\/p>\n

Murgon try scorers were Sam Fuller (3), Christopher Bond, Barwoo Fisher and Luke Dudgeon. Bond kicked five goals.<\/p>\n

Wondai tries were scored by Tristan Parry, Dave Simpson, Jack McDowell, Matt Stumer, Michael Ray and Eddie Aubrey. Luke Hedges kicked three goals and Danny Alberts, one.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The A Grade game between the Hornets and Kingaroy played at Cherbourg on Saturday was close at half-time, with the teams locked at 10-all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Red Ants continued to test the home team at the start of the second half, but the Hornets then overwhelmed Kingaroy in the last 20 minutes to record a 44-22 victory.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/h2>\n

South Burnett Under 18s were defeated 48-22 in a keenly fought away game played against Toowoomba Souths in Toowoomba last Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At half-time the Eagles were behind 28-12 in the TRL game.<\/p>\n

David Hopkins,\u00a0 Jakeb Mead, Patrick Gentry and Tyson Ellul scored tries for South Burnett and Mead kicked three goals.<\/p>\n

The Eagles’ next game is against Toowoomba Brothers on May 12 (venue TBA).<\/p>\n

Murgon Mustangs also have a team playing in the Toowoomba JRL competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Under 16s team played its Round 1 game against Toowoomba Valleys in Toowoomba on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Mustangs had a strong second half, going down by just two points 18-16.<\/p>\n

Murgon tries were scored by Christopher Kerkow, Glen Fisher and Joshua Peterson. Fisher kicked two goals and Lloyd Langton, one.<\/p>\n

The Mustangs will now play Gatton in Round 2 on Saturday at Cherbourg.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Eagles girls teams – Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 17s – played in Toowoomba on Friday night in Round 2 of the Toowoomba JRL competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The girls took on Toowoomba Valleys at their home ground.<\/p>\n

Under 12s defeated Valleys 36-8,\u00a0 Under 14s won 20-16, and Under 17s 36-0.<\/p>\n

Round 1 of the competition was played in Kingaroy against Toowoomba Souths on April 26.<\/p>\n

Under 12s had a bye and Souths forfeited in Under 17s.<\/p>\n

The Under 14s enjoyed a 16-12 victory.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/h2>\n

The selection of the Under 35kg (born 2009-10) and Under 43kg (born 2007-08) South Burnett Eagles teams for 47th Battalion will be held in Kingaroy from 8:30am on Monday (May 6).<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the last trial and teams will be announced on the day. <\/span><\/p>\n

The 47th Battalion junior games will be played at Murgon Sportsground on May 11.<\/p>\n
