South Burnett Regional Council will start an eight-week trial of a free bicycle hire scheme on May 16.<\/p>\n

The scheme is a follow-up to the Council’s most recent “Get Out Get Active” program.<\/p>\n

Last July, the Council received a $17,944 grant from the Department of National Parks, Sports and Racing to fund a free program to encourage more women and girls to take up cycling.<\/p>\n

As part of that program, the Council acquired 15 mountain bikes and cycling helmets, and committed to making them available for public use after the cycling course ended.<\/p>\n

During the trial period, the 15 bikes and helmets will be available for free hire from the Kingaroy and Wondai Visitor Information Centres and the Lake Boondooma Recreation Park on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The South Burnett is blessed with some excellent cycling trails including the South Burnett Rail Trail,” Mayor Keith Campbell said.<\/p>\n

“This free bike hire scheme is a fantastic opportunity for residents and visitors to get active on the Rail Trail without having to make the investment of purchasing their own bike.”<\/p>\n

Hirers will be required to fill out a Bike Hire Waiver Form and bring along a copy of their driver’s licence, passport or Australian proof-of-age card.<\/p>\n

The ID copy will be held as a deposit for the duration of the hire and will be given back to participants when they return their bike to the point of hire.<\/p>\n

If the bicycle is not returned, the ID copy will be passed to the police.<\/p>\n

Council plans to collect anonymised data on the bicycle hire scheme during the trial.<\/p>\n

This data will available to anyone considering starting a commercial bicycle hire service in the region, the Mayor told southburnett.com.au<\/strong><\/p>\n
