Landholders are being urged to educate themselves about bushfire mitigation as Operation Cool Burn was officially launched again across Queensland on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The annual campaign – which usually runs from April to the end of July – encourages councils and landholders across Queensland to prepare for the upcoming bushfire season.<\/p>\n

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services also supports bushfire mitigation activities in National Parks and plantation forests.<\/p>\n

These include hazard reduction burning to reduce fuel loads, improvement of strategic fire breaks and targeted community education to inform residents in the highest priority areas of actions they can take to better prepare for bushfires.<\/p>\n

\u201cBushfire mitigation helps reduce the potential impact of significant blazes during bushfire season and its importance can\u2019t be underestimated,\u201d Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecent rainfall has certainly eased the dry conditions around some parts of the State and may give QFES and its land management agency partners the chance to undertake hazard reduction burns in the coming months.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, reducing bushfire risk needs to be a partnership with the public – it\u2019s essential you limit fire risk on your property.<\/p>\n

\u201cSimple tasks around your property could be extremely beneficial: putting in fire breaks, mowing lawns, slashing overgrown vegetation and emptying gutters.<\/p>\n

\u201cReview and update your household Bushfire Survival Plan, find out if there is a nearby Neighbourhood Safer Place, check your first aid kit is fully stocked and check you have sufficient personal protective clothing and equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the agency was involved in more than 3000 hazard-reduction burns last year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAs always, Operation Cool Burn is dependent on the weather, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s so important for residents to take proactive measures of their own on their properties,\u201d Ms Carroll said.<\/p>\n

\u201cQueensland\u2019s bushfire season traditionally begins mid-year so it\u2019s vital that these activities are undertaken now to minimise potential danger later in the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of this mitigation period we aim to have a substantial reduction in hazards and to be well prepared for bushfire season. I ask that our communities are also well prepared so that together we can reduce the impacts of the 2019 bushfire season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Carroll said while the onus was on individuals to prepare themselves, there was plenty of support available.<\/p>\n

\u201cQFES is a knowledge hub. We are here to help and will work alongside Queensland residents,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnsure you\u2019re in the know and engaged by contacting your local fire warden or QFES office or fire brigade, following QFES on social media platforms and checking the Rural Fire Service website<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to target bushfire-prone locations, prioritise areas to conduct mitigation activities and assist local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
