South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell has backed plans by the South Burnett PCYC to trial opening late on Saturday nights in an effort to reduce youth crime in Murgon and Cherbourg.<\/p>\n

Mayor Campbell said Council supported any community initiatives led by the State Government to tackle crime.<\/p>\n

He said crime was a complex issue, and tackling it required State Government support for key organisations such as the PCYC which could work across local government boundaries.<\/p>\n

“In recent months, the State Government has listened to our communities by funding prevention, management and rehabilitation programs through organisations such as the Murgon PCYC,” Mayor Campbell said.<\/p>\n

He said Council has also been working with local service providers and State agencies, community groups, police consultative committees and neighbourhood watch groups to help tackle the problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Council recently secured funding to develop a Community Action Plan through the Local Drug Action Team,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The plan will include activities designed to prevent addiction to alcohol and other drugs, which could lead to criminal behaviour.<\/p>\n

“This Council is committed to supporting community-based models of delivery which play an important role in the implementation of crime prevention strategies.”<\/p>\n

The Mayor said the region was fortunate to have a range of locally based agencies delivering services that reduced the likelihood a person would become involved in crime or antisocial behaviour.<\/p>\n

“To this end, Council will support the efforts of the Murgon Business Development Association, Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council and members of both communities to help work through the lawlessness issues impacting residents and businesses.”<\/p>\n
