April 1, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

An elderly woman was airlifted to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition about 1:00pm on Monday after a crash near Woolooga.<\/p>\n

A police spokesperson said emergency services were despatched to the corner of Southern Road and the Wide Bay Highway near Turpentine Creek about noon on Monday.<\/p>\n

They found a car and hay truck on the site, with the female car driver still trapped in the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Hydraulic cutters were used to free her, which was accomplished about 1:00pm.<\/p>\n

The woman, aged in her 70s, was then airlifted to hospital by the RACQ LifeFlight helicopter which landed nearby.<\/p>\n

The driver of the hay truck was uninjured, but the woman is believed to have suffered serious injuries to her chest and both legs.<\/p>\n

LifeFlight critical care doctor Joakim Johansson said it was lucky she wasn’t killed.<\/p>\n

“Her airbags were deployed and the vehicle was very heavily impacted,” he said.<\/p>\n

The highway was reopened to traffic soon afterwards.<\/p>\n

Police investigations into the cause of the incident are continuing.<\/p>\n
