Fred Cobbo put the first points on the board in the 2019 South Burnett A Grade rugby league season when he scored for the Hornets against Wondai on Saturday<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The 2019 South Burnett rugby league competition got off to a blazing start last weekend … and despite the loss of last year’s premiers from the competition, the season is looking promising.<\/p>\n

Two closely fought games in A Grade gave the fans plenty to cheer about.<\/p>\n

The first was between the Wondai Wolves and the Cherbourg Hornets, played in scorching heat at Wondai Sportsground.<\/p>\n

An undermanned Wondai side put on courageous performances week-after-week last year despite having cricket scores racked up against them.<\/p>\n

But they’re off to a much better start this year.<\/p>\n

At half-time against the Hornets, the Wolves were in the lead 26-16 (which included a penalty try).<\/p>\n

However, by full-time, Cherbourg had overhauled the home team 42-30.<\/p>\n

Even so, Wolves’ fans would have gone home happy with their team’s performance.<\/p>\n

Cherbourg try scorers were Fred Cobbo (2), Anthony Gray (2), Bernard Hopkins, Nathan Gadd, Peter Carlo and Thomas Simpson. Theo Fisher kicked three goals and George Fisher, two.<\/p>\n

Wondai tries were scored by\u00a0Cayden Satrick\u00a0(2),\u00a0Steven Langton Watcho (2) and Michael Ray, one. Danny Alberts kicked five goals.<\/p>\n

In Kingaroy, the Red Ants (or rather the Pink Ants) took on the Murgon Mustangs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This game was played in four 20-minute quarters rather than the 40-minute halves endured at Wondai.<\/p>\n

At the end of the first quarter, Kingaroy led 12-0.<\/p>\n

At half-time, Murgon had narrowed the gap to 12-10; and by three-quarter time the Mustangs had pulled into the lead 16-12.<\/p>\n

At full-time, Mustangs’ fans were celebrating a 26-24 victory after a very close game.<\/p>\n

Murgon try scorers were Jameel Sullivan, Lehman Brunjes, Barwoo Fisher, Barry Tapau Fewquandie and Maurice Fisher. Chris Bond kicked three goals.<\/p>\n

Kingaroy tries were scored by Connor Sullivan (2), Jack Rowan and Jye Hopkins. Rowan kicked four goals.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Rugby League president Greg Pomfret confirmed that an InTrust Super Cup game will be played in the South Burnett\u00a0 later this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The date and venue is still to be confirmed, but it will be a Round 18 game on July 20-21, most likely between the Sunshine Coast Falcons and Norths Devils.<\/p>\n
