{"id":231562,"date":"2019-03-25T15:28:54","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T05:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=231562"},"modified":"2020-07-22T10:07:19","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T00:07:19","slug":"meeting-to-focus-on-crime-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2019\/03\/25\/meeting-to-focus-on-crime-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Meeting To Focus On Crime Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_231591\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-231591\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190325murgon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-231591\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190325murgon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190325murgon.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20190325murgon-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-231591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff, Murgon Business and Development Association secretary Margaret Long and Member for Wide Bay Llew O&#8217;Brien at the launch of the Murgon CCTV project in Murgon in 2017 &#8230; looking for solutions to youth crime<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>March 25, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff is hoping a community meeting in Murgon on Tuesday night will bring the communities of Murgon and Cherbourg together to tackle the problem of youth crime in the towns.<\/p>\n<p>The town hall meeting has been organised by Cr Duff and local pastor Max Conlon, who has been recently overseeing the AIM Church in Cherbourg.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He is an Indigenous pastor and highly respected Elder,&#8221; Cr Duff said.<\/p>\n<p>Max will be chairing the meeting, which will also be attended by senior police from the Dalby-Burnett Patrol Group responsible for the South Burnett region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to get Cherbourg people and Murgon people to work together to solve the issues,&#8221; Cr Duff told <strong>southburnett.com.au.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of these solutions could be the introduction of night activities at the South Burnett PCYC in Murgon.<\/p>\n<p>A similar program has been running for a short time in Moree, in northern NSW, and has so far proven successful.<\/p>\n<p>Activities start at 9:00pm in the Moree program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Children who would otherwise be wandering the streets drop in and enjoy games with their mates and build more positive relationships with local police.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would like us to mirror what&#8217;s happening in Moree,&#8221; Cr Duff said.<\/p>\n<p>She hoped that if a similar program could be organised on a Saturday night in Murgon, it could also provide a meal for the children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of the children aren&#8217;t being looked after. A meal is what could make the difference,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Duff said she was trying to get the community &#8220;to buy in&#8221; on the idea, and offer to volunteer to help make it a reality.<\/p>\n<p>However, she said it was also important to continue lobbying for more police in the area, especially after hours and on weekends.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Duff said the Murgon community felt like it was getting &#8220;belted from pillar to post&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But she said the meeting at Murgon Town Hall would not be about &#8220;getting up and whingeing about what has happened&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There won&#8217;t be any room for people to be negative,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>It will begin at 6:00pm.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers from both the Murgon and Cherbourg Men&#8217;s Sheds will be providing a sausage sizzle.<\/p>\n<p>Member for Wide Bay Llew O&#8217;Brien will also be attending the meeting but\u00a0Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington will be an apology as State Parliament is sitting.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>External link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-03-08\/moree-answer-to-youth-crime\/10874768\">Youth Crime In Decline In Moree<\/a> (ABC News)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91857\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91857\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/leogeraghty1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-91857\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/leogeraghty1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/leogeraghty1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/leogeraghty1-176x300.jpg 176w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MBDA President Leo Geraghty<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Murgon businesspeople are calling for a 10:00pm curfew to be imposed in the town and more police on the streets in a bid to curb youth crime.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A petition to the State Government has been released by Leo Geraghty, president of the Murgon Business and Development Association.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The petition reads:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House continuing concerns about the level of youth-related crime in Murgon; young people being unsupervised on the street after 10:00pm; insufficient staffing levels at the Murgon Police Station on weekends; and ineffective, soft-on-crime sentences for young offenders through the court system.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Your petitioners therefore request the House to consider additional strategies to combat youth crime such as a curfew of 10:00pm for the township of Murgon; additional police to be rostered for weekend night shifts; additional police on the streets of Murgon between 10:00pm and 5:00am; and tougher sentencing for youth offenders.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paper copies of the petition will be available to sign in Murgon at Clifton Motors, Murgon Real Estate and the Murgon Visitor Information Centre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It will also be available at the Murgon Town Hall meeting on Tuesday night, and\u00a0will be online as an official ePetition later this week.<\/p>\n<p>The closing date for the petition will be May 10.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition Leader and Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington has agreed to sponsor the petition and will table it in State Parliament.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The petition and the town hall meeting follow more recent break-ins, thefts and vandalism in Murgon which have provoked anger from the local business community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On March 13, the MBDA publicised concerns by a local GP that he may have to close his surgery in the town.<\/p>\n<p>This followed the sighting of youths on the roof of his building and fears that patient confidentiality could be breached if the surgery was broken into.<\/p>\n<p>After this, paint was thrown over three vehicles outside the surgery and rocks tossed at the surgery door.<\/p>\n<p>Rumours also swept the town about an alleged incident involving an ambulance crew in Cherbourg about midnight on March 16.<\/p>\n<p>However, local versions of this event appear exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p>A police media spokesperson told <strong>southburnett.com.au<\/strong>\u00a0officers were called to assist the QAS when a patient &#8220;became unruly&#8221;. The patient was then transported to hospital.
