Miss Wandoan and Miss South-West Queensland (better known as Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington), Miss Proston (better known as South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff) and Miss Gympie (better known as Sharon O’Brien, wife of Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien) … the message is clear: if you want to get ahead in the world, get involved with your local Show Society!

March 21, 2019

No one in a rural area ever begrudges the rain, but Murgon Show Society probably would have been a little happier if the skies had stayed blue on Saturday.

Heavy rain in the lead-up forced the cancellation of all horse events in the ring as well as the vintage tractor display and the tractor pull.

But Show Society president Alan Trim was still feeling happy afterwards.

This was Alan’s first show as president and he was obviously relieved that everything went as well as it did, even though numbers through the gate on Saturday were down.

But things picked up at night.

“There was a monster crowd at the rodeo,” Alan told southburnett.com.au

“I think the show went extremely well for the weather conditions.”

He was also full of praise for his committee.

“Our committee is a mix of young and old, and they have a whole lot of enthusiasm already for next year.”

The 96th Murgon Show was officially opened by Nathan Trace, from Nanango, the 2018 Queensland runner-up in the Rural Ambassador competition.

Nathan said the annual show was a “family time” which should be valued by the community.

His family has a long connection with rural shows, and he said it was always a great time to catch up with friends and family.

“We know it’s been reduced in numbers today because of the rain but it should be remembered that we rely on that, that’s our livelihoods out here in the bush,” Nathan said.
