Applications are now open for aspiring young leaders who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander to participate in this year\u2019s Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (QIYLP).<\/p>\n

Child Safety Minister Di Farmer said the QIYLP, which is now in its 15th<\/span>\u00a0year, was a wonderful opportunity for young Indigenous Queenslanders to develop leadership skills, offer professional development and learn about influencing change.<\/p>\n

\u201cForty young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can come together from across the State for a six-day residential program,\u201d Ms Farmer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout the program, they develop leadership skills together, but they also learn how to prepare and deliver a community project in their own community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe young participants will undertake a range of experiences including leadership and professional development workshops, mentoring and networking opportunities and attend Parliament workshops.\u201d<\/p>\n

The program is delivered in partnership with Queensland Parliamentary Services with sponsorship from mining company Glencore.<\/p>\n

The residential program will take place in Brisbane from June 29 to July 4 and is open to young people aged from 18 to 25.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery young person who attends a QIYLP is a potential future leader, and the experience they gain through the program is designed to help them along that journey,\u201d Ms Farmer said.<\/p>\n

Ms Farmer said there had already been more than 500 young people participate in QIYLP since its inception in 2004, and it was pleasing to see large numbers returning in subsequent years as participant mentors, co-facilitators and lead facilitators.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d urge any young Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Queenslander to consider applying for the QIYLP \u2014 it will be an experience you won\u2019t forget,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Applications open on March 1 and will close April 15.<\/p>\n
