{"id":229928,"date":"2019-02-28T19:18:28","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T09:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=229928"},"modified":"2020-07-24T09:38:26","modified_gmt":"2020-07-23T23:38:26","slug":"bad-news-more-dry-times-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2019\/02\/28\/bad-news-more-dry-times-ahead\/","title":{"rendered":"Bad News: More Dry Times Ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PXSkMUYIgl8\" width=\"740\" height=\"440\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>February 28, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology released its updated 2019 Autumn Outlook on Thursday, showing drier-than-average conditions are likely for large parts of northern and eastern Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Warmer-than-average conditions are very likely for the entire country.<\/p>\n<p>The forecast comes on the back of what will be Australia&#8217;s warmest summer on record.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau&#8217;s manager of long-range forecasting, Dr Andrew Watkins, acknowledged the outlook was not the news many would be wanting to hear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;After a record hot December and January it won&#8217;t come as a surprise that this summer will be our warmest on record, and apart from areas of northern Queensland, many locations fell short of their summer rainfall averages, too,&#8221; Dr Watkins said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, the outlook isn&#8217;t giving a strong indication that we&#8217;ll see a return to average or above average rainfall in many areas over the autumn period. The only exception is for parts of inland Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Autumn is obviously a critical time of year for agriculture, particularly in the southern parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to remember that despite what the outlook is suggesting, individual heavy rainfall events are always possible, and people should stay up to date with the latest seven-day forecast and warnings for their area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The outlooks also show that warmer-than-average conditions are very likely to continue through autumn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we have a look at what&#8217;s driving the outlook, we can see that Australia&#8217;s two main climate drivers in the El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation and the Indian Ocean Dipole are currently in a neutral phase, meaning there&#8217;s no strong influence from either,&#8221; Dr Watkins said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;But things have been warming in the tropical Pacific Ocean over the past month, so we are currently at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/enso\/outlook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Ni\u00f1o WATCH<\/a> \u2013 meaning double the normal chance of an El Ni\u00f1o forming in autumn.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are also observing cooler-than-average waters off the coast of Western Australia, which may reduce the number of rain-bearing systems impacting the south of the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also know that 24 of the last 29 years have seen a drier-than-average start to autumn in south-eastern Australia due to a long term southwards shift of our weather patterns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau will be releasing its summer summaries on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary figures indicate that Summer 2018-19 will be Australia&#8217;s warmest summer on record, and will also be among the top 10 driest since national rainfall figures started in 1910.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also expected the current summer will be among the top five warmest on record for each State and Territory.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>External link: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/outlooks\/#\/overview\/summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The latest outlook<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bureau of Meteorology released its updated 2019 Autumn Outlook on Thursday, showing drier-than-average conditions are likely for large parts of northern and eastern Australia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":229931,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
