Plans to expand the SupaIGA shopping complex in Kingaroy have taken a step forward, 12 months after the site was granted a development approval by the South Burnett Regional Council<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A plan to expand Kingaroy’s SupaIGA supermarket – first announced 12 months ago – has taken a major step forward.<\/p>\n

At Wednesday’s South Burnett Regional Council meeting, councillors voted unanimously to lease a portion of the former Pound Street Council depot site to the construction company which will be carrying out the expansion project.<\/p>\n

The vacant land will be used to store equipment and materials used to form and pour precast concrete wall slabs.<\/p>\n

Council has offered to lease the land to the company for a maximum of six months at market rates on condition there is no detrimental effect on the block.<\/p>\n

Council decommissioned Pound Street as a works depot after their new site in Ivins Street opened in 2005.<\/p>\n

It then spent close to $1 million cleaning up the Pound Street land, finally receiving the all-clear in December 2014 when the site was removed from the State Contaminated Land Register.<\/p>\n

Since then, Council has put the block on the market several times in the hope of attracting an interested buyer who would create a development in keeping with the site’s proximity to Kingaroy’s CBD.<\/p>\n

However, no firm offers have eventuated.<\/p>\n

Council granted a development approval last February to expand the SupaIGA complex in Avoca Street by 11 per cent with the addition of a cafe, pharmacy, liquor store and specialty shop.<\/p>\n

The expansion would increase the retail floor space in the complex from 4517 sq m to 5042 sq m but remove several\u00a0car parking spaces next to the building.<\/p>\n

This would allow the supermarket’s entrance to be moved, providing safer pedestrian access to the complex.<\/p>\n

The proposal also included putting a roof over Domino Pizza\u2019s outdoor dining area.<\/p>\n
