{"id":228813,"date":"2019-02-18T20:22:14","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T10:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=228813"},"modified":"2019-02-18T21:09:53","modified_gmt":"2019-02-18T11:09:53","slug":"teens-missing-out-on-vaccines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2019\/02\/18\/teens-missing-out-on-vaccines\/","title":{"rendered":"Teens Missing Out On Vaccines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>February 18, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Queensland Health is urging parents urged to keep an eye out for consent forms and ensure their children receive their free vaccinations, as the school immunisation program kicks off for the year.<\/p>\n<p>All Year 7 students have access to a free diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine, as well as a two-dose course of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Year 10 students have access to a free meningococcal ACWY vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Medical Director of the Immunisation Program, Dr Alun Richards, said the latest available data showed teenagers were missing out on their school vaccinations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIn the 2017 school immunisation program, 79 per cent of Year 7 students received a vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis; 67 per cent completed the course of the HPV vaccine; and 64 per cent of Year 10 students received a dose of meningococcal ACWY vaccine,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile some families opt to vaccinate at their local GP or immunisation clinic, coverage is below what we\u2019d like to see across Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m urging parents to return the consent forms and ensure their kids are protected from these awful diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s free and very convenient for kids to have the vaccine at school, with clinics running at all State and non-State schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Richards said diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough were all serious illnesses that could be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiphtheria and tetanus are relatively uncommon, but can be very serious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhooping cough usually only causes a persistent cough for adults and adolescents, but it can be life-threatening for babies and young children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cVaccination for diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough is provided in a single combined dose \u2013 meaning only one jab, not three.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren get vaccinated against these diseases when very young, but need a booster in Year 7\u00a0to maintain immunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYear 7 students will be offered two doses of HPV vaccine, around six months apart, with both\u00a0doses covered under the school immunisation program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Richards said students in Year 10 should receive one dose of the meningococcal ACWY\u00a0vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeningococcal disease is a very serious infection and can cause death within 24 hours. Those that\u00a0survive can have life-long disability including severe scarring, loss of limbs and brain damage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung adults can have higher carriage rates of the bacteria that causes meningococcal disease,\u00a0which is why they are a priority group for vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If anyone misses out on any of these vaccines through school, a catch-up program is available\u00a0through GPs and immunisation clinics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Queensland Health is urging parents urged to keep an eye out for consent forms and ensure their children receive their free vaccinations, as the school immunisation program kicks off for the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":228961,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[172,3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
