Teams of pink-attired “cricketers” and a loyal band of supporters descended on Kingaroy’s TJ O’Neill Oval on Sunday to support the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Stumps Day.<\/p>\n

This annual fundraiser helps place McGrath Breast Care Nurses into Australian communities, and also raises breast health awareness among young women.<\/p>\n

Eight social cricketing teams – the Crazy Pinkies, Pink Bits, Pigs Might Fly, SFI, Ex-Wives, Pink Things, Yobbos and Clubbers – spent the day defending their wickets with what was arguably some of the worst cricketing (and worst fashion sense) seen in the South Burnett so far this year.<\/p>\n

But beyond occasional humorous heckling from onlookers and equally good-natured sledging on the pitch, no one actually cared how good or otherwise the cricket was.<\/p>\n

Or the fashion, come to that.<\/p>\n

The real aim of the day was to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation and have a good time doing it.<\/p>\n

And by that yardstick, the get-together was a great success.<\/p>\n

Organiser Darren Geiger said he was very happy with the turnout and praised the community spirit of everyone involved.<\/p>\n

“Everybody who’s come out today is here to have a good time and raise money for a good cause, not win,” he said.<\/p>\n

“This is fun way to spend a Sunday, and I’m only sorry tomorrow is Monday because none of us will have a day to recover from it.”<\/p>\n

Pink Stumps Day is a joint effort by the Kumbia and Kingaroy RSL cricket clubs. It’s the second time the event has been held – last year, it was in Kumbia – and was originally scheduled for Australia Day but had to be postponed for a week due to rain.<\/p>\n

This year’s pinkness was sponsored by the Kumbia Hotel, the Telstra Shop, Vick’s Crafty Bits, the Queensland Bulls Masters, the Bulldogs NRL Club and the Kingaroy Red Ants.<\/p>\n

The next South Burnett McGrath Foundation fundraiser will be a Charity Bowls Night at the Wondai Country Club on Friday, February 15.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is being organised by the Wondai Cricket Club and it’s open to cricketers, bowlers and non-bowlers alike. It promises some of the worst displays of lawn bowls seen in the South Burnett this year.<\/p>\n
