{"id":22768,"date":"2013-02-04T17:22:29","date_gmt":"2013-02-04T07:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=22768"},"modified":"2020-09-30T13:07:02","modified_gmt":"2020-09-30T03:07:02","slug":"reduce-risk-from-mozzies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2013\/02\/04\/reduce-risk-from-mozzies\/","title":{"rendered":"Reduce Risk From Mozzies"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_20537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20537\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/aedes_aegypti.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20537\" title=\"Aedes aegypti\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/aedes_aegypti.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/aedes_aegypti.jpg 350w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/aedes_aegypti-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aedes aegypti ... the dengue fever mozzie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>February 4, 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Burnett Regional Council is urging residents to be on the lookout to reduce mosquito breeding in their backyards in the wake of the recent floods.<\/p>\n<p>Stagnant water left after rain can be a great breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<p>Mosquitoes can carry Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus in the South Burnett.<\/p>\n<p>There is no known risk of Dengue in the area at this time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can reduce mosquitoes around your home by:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Inspecting your house and yard and removing any pools and containers of water;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Empty pot plant bases weekly or fill the base with sand to absorb water;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Wash out bromeliads and other water-holding plants weekly;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Clean out roof gutters regularly and trim back trees which can block gutters;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Ensure rainwater tanks are screened;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Maintain swimming pools;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Wash out birdbaths and ornamental pools weekly; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Ensure ponds are stocked with suitable native fish.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What you can do to protect yourself:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Screen all windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes coming inside;<\/li>\n<li>While outside wear long sleeved, loose-fitting clothing;<\/li>\n<li>Use insect repellent;<\/li>\n<li>If you live in an unscreened house or are camping, sleep under a mosquito net;<\/li>\n<li>Air-conditioning, fans and mosquito coils are also effective in protecting you from mosquitoes;<\/li>\n<li>Drains or depressions: Maintain drains to allow for water flow and fill in any depressions to prevent water ponding;<\/li>\n<li>Swimming pools: Keep chlorinated and regularly operate the pool pump;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fact sheets for residents about mosquitoes are available from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southburnett.qld.gov.au\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Council&#8217;s website<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Burnett Regional Council is urging residents to be on the lookout to reduce mosquito breeding in their backyards in the wake of the recent floods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":20537,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[22,172,3],"tags":[1131],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
