{"id":227017,"date":"2019-01-29T13:20:09","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T03:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=227017"},"modified":"2019-01-30T21:18:24","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T11:18:24","slug":"ghost-crab-pots-seized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2019\/01\/29\/ghost-crab-pots-seized\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Ghost&#8217; Crab Pots Seized"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_170025\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170025\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-170025\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Agricultural Industry Development Minister Mark Furner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>January 29, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fisheries Patrol officers have seized 130 crab pots during a targeted operation this month.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture Minister Mark Furner said the operation targeted abandoned crab pots in the Maroochy River which could continue to &#8220;ghost fish&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGhost fishing happens when lost or abandoned fishing gear continues to catch crabs, fish and other wildlife which become trapped, die and then act as bait continuing the cycle,\u201d Mr Furner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrabbing is one of Queensland\u2019s most popular forms of fishing however the impact of ghost fishing on the environment is a serious problem that must be addressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe high number of abandoned crab pots, some of which can trap turtles, recovered by QBFP officers shows that greater care needs to be taken by fishers setting crab pots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Furner said the proper use of fishing gear was ultimately the responsibility of fishers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA range of legal requirements apply to crabbing in Queensland including restrictions on fishing gear and size and possession limit,\u201d Mr Furner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, fishers can be fined $261 for failing to mark apparatus correctly or failing to use a prescribed float.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who see suspected unmarked, lost or abandoned crabbing apparatus, should record an accurate location, such as GPS co-ordinates, of the apparatus and report it to their closest Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol office or the FishWatch hotline on 1800-017-116.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under Fisheries legislation, it is an offence to unlawfully interfere with fishing gear including crab pots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr Furner said the recent roll out of body worn cameras was helping Sunshine Coast QBFP officers with compliance operations and prosecutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cQBFP monitors fisheries compliance by more than 642,000 recreational fishers and 1700 commercial fishing licence holders,\u201d Mr Furner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy its nature, Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol field work can be hazardous and officers at times operate in difficult, often isolated and dynamic environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now a workplace health and safety requirement for all Queensland fisheries officers to wear the cameras to capture video footage of inspections and interactions with the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe body-worn cameras and upgraded computer servers to store the recorded data have been progressively rolled out to QBFP\u2019s 19 bases statewide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe footage is stored in a secure environment and reviewed if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fisheries Patrol officers have seized 130 crab pots during a targeted operation this month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":170026,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[421,3],"tags":[1153],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
