{"id":225898,"date":"2018-12-18T13:58:20","date_gmt":"2018-12-18T03:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=225898"},"modified":"2020-07-09T11:38:51","modified_gmt":"2020-07-09T01:38:51","slug":"council-staff-examine-petition-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2018\/12\/18\/council-staff-examine-petition-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Staff Examine Petition Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_124085\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124085\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-124085\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/20151015-murgon-pool.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/20151015-murgon-pool.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/20151015-murgon-pool-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/20151015-murgon-pool-285x177.jpg 285w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/20151015-murgon-pool-269x167.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A petition calling for Murgon&#8217;s Jubilee Pool to be opened in the morning &#8211; and three other petitions &#8211; are expected to be debated by the Council early in the New Year (Photo: SBRC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>December 18, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Petitions calling on the South Burnett Regional Council to respond to several local issues of concern will be considered by councillors in the New Year.<\/p>\n<p>During the past two months, the Council received four petitions, calling for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The relocation of Wondai&#8217;s Christmas tree from the roundabout to Coronation Park,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Opening Murgon&#8217;s Jubilee Swimming Pool every morning,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Improving and upgrading Carew Park in Kingaroy, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Building a multi-age playground at Bjelke-Petersen Dam&#8217;s day use area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The petitions were tabled and accepted at the November and December meetings without comment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, Mayor Keith Campbell said on Tuesday they had not been ignored.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead, all petitions have been forwarded on to staff in the relevant Council departments for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Staff will examine the issues surrounding each request and deliver reports back to Councillors for discussion.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor said with the festive season break coming up, he thought it was likely the reports would be received early in the New Year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Mayor said Councillors took petitions seriously.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, the way they were handled was covered by the Council&#8217;s Conduct Of Council And Committee Meetings policy.<\/p>\n<p>This policy forbids any discussion of petitions during meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Councillors can only vote to accept or reject them.<\/p>\n<p>If accepted, the petition is then passed on to a Council officer or committee for consideration and action.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We accepted all four petitions, and they&#8217;re now being looked at,&#8221; Mayor Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I expect we&#8217;ll be debating them in January or February once Council&#8217;s officers have investigated what we can do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor said the process outlined in the Council&#8217;s policy was designed to ensure all petitions were handled in a standard way, and issues raised in them were assessed fairly and professionally.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Footnote: A fifth petition, on the unofficial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/south-burnett-regional-council-mandatory-desexing-of-unregistered-cats-and-dogs-in-south-burnett\">change.org website,<\/a> is calling on the South Burnett Regional Council to make all pet desexing mandatory in the region, except for pedigree animals.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Petitions calling on the South Burnett Regional Council to respond to several local issues of concern will be considered by councillors in the New Year <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":124085,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[22,3],"tags":[1131],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
