Heavy rain on Friday night caused damage to a former sullage pond in Cherbourg.<\/p>\n

Cherbourg Council CEO Warren Collins said Council staff had dug out a section of wall as part of a project to dry out and rehabilitate the ponds, which are no longer in use following the opening of a new wastewater treatment plant in the town earlier this year.<\/p>\n

“Unfortunately, we had 60mm of rain overnight,” Mr Collins said.<\/p>\n

Some of the contents of the old pond washed out.<\/p>\n

“We don’t think very much – if anything – went into the creek,” Mr Collins said. <\/p>\n

“It is now contained.” <\/p>\n

Council workers repaired the gap in the wall on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Regional Council advised on Saturday afternoon that Murgon and Wondai water supplies were safe to drink.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Council is aware of an incident in the neighbouring council of Cherbourg where an old sewerage pond was drained, potentially impacting the South Burnett water supply to towns in that area,” Mayor Keith Campbell said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeasures have been put in place to lessen the risk to our community.<\/p>\n

“Council will continue to monitor water quality and treat the town’s water supply to ensure it is safe for consumption.”<\/p>\n
