{"id":22468,"date":"2013-02-01T10:12:14","date_gmt":"2013-02-01T00:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=22468"},"modified":"2013-03-25T22:59:12","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T12:59:12","slug":"workers-slept-at-power-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2013\/02\/01\/workers-slept-at-power-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Workers Slept At Power Station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_13225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13225\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/dennis-franklin200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/dennis-franklin200.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Dennis Franklin\" width=\"200\" height=\"282\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tarong Site Manager<br \/>Dennis Franklin<\/figcaption><\/figure><strong>February 1, 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tarong Power Station site manager Dennis Franklin is full of praise for his employees during the flood  crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Employees kept up power supplies to the South Burnett and Queensland despite widespread flooding in the region over the past week. <\/p>\n<p>Mr Franklin said some weekend shift employees slept at the power station on Sunday when roads were cut off by floods and some Nanango-based employees came in to work at very short notice.<\/p>\n<p>Those who slept at work, on temporary mattresses, were available in case they were needed by the night shift, which consisted entirely of Nanango-based employees who changed their roster in light of the severe weather. <\/p>\n<p>Those who had to work the next day and could not return home spent the night in the Yarraman Motel after most routes to the power station were cut-off due to localised flooding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI acknowledge the commitment of our employees who ensured power was produced for Queenslanders during one of the most extreme weather events the State has experienced,\u201d Mr Franklin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular I thank the employees who slept at the power station, and Nanango-based employees for their commitment, flexibility and professionalism.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mr Franklin also thanked the South Burnett Regional Council and its people for reopening access roads promptly after floodwaters had receded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil did a fantastic job in clearing and checking access routes such as the Brooklands bridge,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Significant parts of the South Burnett lost power in the past week, mostly as a safety measure by Ergon to protect householders.<\/p>\n<p>Stanwell made sure that power was available to supply homes and business when it was safe to restore.  <\/p>\n<p>Mr Franklin said one of the reasons Tarong Power Station remained fully operational was the planning employees undertake to prepare for extreme weather events, which usually occur in summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Tarong Summer Readiness Plan ensures the power station has extra coal, extra diesel for restarts, emergency communications and other resources in case of natural disasters. <\/p>\n<p>Adding to the difficulty was that mobile phone communications were also intermittent on the weekend, in common with many other parts of Queensland, though a satellite phone was available.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Franklin said he had only seen the power station cut off by road on two occasions in his 20 years working at the power station. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese times were the statewide flooding of two years ago and the current flooding, which has been just as severe as 2011 but over a shorter period,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tarong Power Station site manager Dennis Franklin is full of praise for his employees during the floods crisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":22506,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[5,3],"tags":[34,105],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
