2018

Wondai’s recent Tidy Towns award wins will never be forgotten now that a whole bunch of signs have been presented to the town.

On Thursday morning, Keep Queensland Beautiful CEO David Curtin turned up at a special Wondai P-9 State School parade with “Binjamin”, much to the delight of the young students.

David and Binjamin presented Principal Peter Sansby with a plaque to record the fact that the school was named Queensland’s Cleaner Greener School in the 2018 Tidy Towns awards.

Mr Sansby praised the efforts of the cleaners and the groundsman who look after the school, and thanked the students and teachers for doing their bit.

The award also recognises sustainability, with the Tidy Towns judges noting the use of rainwater tanks and solar panels at the school.

“When you walk around the school, you can tell you guys are looking after the place,” Mr Curtin said.

“Keep up the good work!”

The Keep Queensland Beautiful team then headed to the Wondai Art Gallery where more signs were officially handed over to representatives from South Burnett Regional Council to mark Wondai’s win as the Tidiest Town in Queensland.

Two large “Welcome To Wondai” signs will soon greet visitors on both sides of town, as well as Wondai “Four Star” accreditation signs.

A more formal award plaque was also presented by Mr Curtin to South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell.

Several speakers noted the significance of the signs being handed over in the “Alison Iszlaub Gallery” – the main space at the Wondai gallery – on the day of Alison’s funeral.

“This is a fantastic honour for Wondai and the art gallery,” Cr Ros Heit said.

But she said it shouldn’t be forgotten that many of the achievements in Wondai had been built “on the shoulders” of Percy and Alison Iszlaub.

Percy, the former Mayor of Wondai Shire, died in February this year.

Also present at the handover ceremony were Council CEO Mark Pitt, Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff and councillors Danita Potter and Gavin Jones.

<figure id="attachment_223635"
