{"id":221485,"date":"2018-11-01T12:45:51","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T02:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=221485"},"modified":"2020-09-23T13:21:06","modified_gmt":"2020-09-23T03:21:06","slug":"council-joins-fags-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2018\/11\/01\/council-joins-fags-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Joins FAGs Fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_167461\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167461\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/keithcampbell.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-167461\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-167461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell (Photo: SBRC)<\/figcaption><\/figure><strong>November 1, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The South Burnett Regional Council will join the Australian Local Government Association&#8217;s (ALGA) push to make council grant funding an issue at the next Federal election.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Mayor Keith Campbell said the Council will receive $12,051,181 in grant funds for its 2018-19 Budget from the State and Federal Governments.<\/p>\n<p>However, while he was grateful for any grant funding the Council received, he noted that Federal Assistance Grants (FAGs) have not kept up with inflation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the time of Local Government amalgamations in 2008, Council received $7,841,223 in FAGs,&#8221; the Mayor said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But for the 2018\/19 budget, that amount has decreased to $6,998,730.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor said in 1996, FAGs funding was equal to around one per cent of Commonwealth tax revenue. <\/p>\n<p>Today, the figure has fallen to just under 0.55%. <\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;This has left our Council, and most every other Council in Australia, worse off,&#8221; Mayor Campbell said. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;FAGs funding has not kept pace with the growth in Commonwealth Taxation Revenue or with the increased demand for services and infrastructure in local communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The result is increased pressure on rates and our budget, making it harder to maintain community services and infrastructure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Campbell said he and his fellow Councillors intend to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the ALGA to make this an issue in the next Federal election, which is expected to be held by next May. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to secure a better deal on federal funding for Local Government from the next Federal Government,&#8221; the Mayor said. <\/p>\n<p>The ALGA will be calling for Council FAGs funding to be pegged to at least one per cent of Commonwealth tax revenue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Irrespective of whether it\u2019s a Liberal\/National Government or a Labor Government, we will be part of the drive to ensure all parties at the next federal election commit to restoring a more sustainable approach to the FAGs funding arrangement,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the FAGs is not increased, continuing pressure will be applied to Council\u2019s Budget. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In reality, ratepayers will need to contribute more to retain the services that are provided if more does not come forward from grants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The alternative is to get rid of some services, however that\u2019s not a palatable proposition because no one wants to lose any service they currently enjoy.&#8221; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The South Burnett Regional Council will join the Australian Local Government Association&#8217;s push to make council grant funding an issue at the next Federal election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":271108,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[22,3],"tags":[1131],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
