The 6th annual Big Screen Film Festival<\/strong> will be coming to Nanango<\/strong> and Kingaroy<\/strong> this Friday, Saturday and Sunday May 18-20. And to celebrate it, we have five free double passes<\/strong> to this year’s best films to give away (including a very hard to get double pass to the official Opening Night on Friday!).<\/p>\n

The Big Screen Film Festival celebrates the best Australian new films that our country has to offer. And this year the line-up is particularly impressive.<\/p>\n

Films that will shown this year include:<\/p>\n

Red Dog<\/strong> – A warm-hearted story about a dog that becomes an outback legend. Luke Ford, Josh Lucas, Rachel Taylor and Noah Taylor star opposite Koko, a red kelpie. This comedy – adapted from the Louis de Bernieres best-selling novel – is based on a true story and filmed in the spectacular Kimberleys.<\/p>\n

<\/object><\/p>\n

Wish You Were Here<\/strong> – a suspenseful thriller coming to Nanango straight from the Sundance Film Festival about four friends who lose themselves in the fun of a carefree South East Asian holiday – but only three return home. Who amongst them knows what really happened on that fateful night when they were dancing under a full moon in Cambodia?<\/p>\n

The Cup<\/strong> – The inspiring true story of jockeys Damien and Jason Oliver and Damien’s win on Media Puzzle in the 2002 Melbourne Cup (from the director of Phar Lap and and The Lighthorsemen).<\/p>\n

Killer Elite<\/strong> – When his mentor is taken captive, a retired member of Britain\u2019s Elite Special Air Service is forced into action. Happy Feet 2<\/strong> – Mumble, The Master of Tap, has a problem because his tiny son, Erik, is choreo-phobic. Reluctant to dance, Erik runs away and encounters The Mighty Sven – a penguin who can fly! Meanwhile, Mumble and his friends discover a new threat their home – one that will take everyone working together to save them. From acclaimed Australian director George Miller and starring the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams and Pink.<\/p>\n

The Overlanders<\/strong> – A 1946 Australian black and white classic starring Chips Rafferty as a drover traversing the Top End while the Japanese threaten Australia. This film will be screening free of charge a 2:00pm on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Gala Occasions<\/h2>\n

There’ll be two special functions<\/strong> at this year’s Big Screen Film Festival – one on Friday night and the other on Saturday night to coincide with the Nanango Race Meeting held at Lee Park earlier in the day.<\/p>\n

The Festival’s official Opening Night<\/strong> will be held on Friday, May 18. Opening Night is restricted to 200 people and in addition to free wine, beer and nibbles it will also feature an appearance by this year’s guest star Martin Sacks<\/strong> (best known for his 12 years as Detective PJ in Blue Heelers where he won five consecutive Silver Logies for Best Actor – but his more recent work includes Sea Patrol, Offspring and Underbelly).<\/p>\n

Martin will also be introducing his new short film “This Dog\u2019s Life<\/strong>“, and then a full screening of the new Aussie thriller “Wish You Were Here<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Then on Saturday night, Martin will be re-appearing at the 7:45pm screening of The Cup<\/strong>. You’ll be able to hear his stories about playing Neil Pinner, the manager and friend of Cup jockey Damien Oliver in the film. And if you wear your best Fashions Of The Field<\/strong> you can be in the running to win prizes awarded by Martin and enjoy a phantom race call.<\/p>\n

The Big Screen Film Festival is run by the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra and has been brought to the South Burnett by the South Burnett Regional Council; the Heritage Bank Nanango Community Branch; Nanango Foodworks; and the Nanango Race Club.<\/p>\n

The Big Screen Film Festival has been touring regional areas of Australia nationally since 2001 and has been coming to Nanango since 2006. Its purpose is to raise awareness of Australian films and the important role they play in Australian culture and national identity.<\/p>\n

The Big Screen Film Festival Opening Night in Nanango has also become one the highlights of the region’s annual social calendar.<\/p>\n
