A funeral will be held in Cherbourg on Friday for former Australian boxer Edward Claude – “Eddie” – Barney.<\/p>\n

Eddie, who represented Australia at the 1962 Empire (now “Commonwealth”) Games in Perth as a Flyweight, died in Caboolture Hospital on August 3.<\/p>\n

He was 76.<\/p>\n

Eddie came from a sporting family.<\/p>\n

He was especially proud of his father, cricket hero Eddie Gilbert who famously bowled Don Bradman for a duck at the Gabba in 1931.<\/p>\n

Eddie Jnr was a special guest at the opening of the “Play The Ball” sports memorabilia exhibition at The Ration Shed precinct in Cherbourg in 2014.<\/p>\n

A year later, he was the guest at a ceremony to rename a cricket oval near Wolston Park, the “Eddie Gilbert Memorial Field”.<\/p>\n

Eddie is survived by his children Eddie, Albert, Peter, Vernon, Anita and their families.<\/p>\n

The funeral service will be held at the Cherbourg Community Hall from 11:30am on Friday to be followed by interment in\u00a0Cherbourg Cemetery.<\/p>\n
