{"id":215552,"date":"2018-08-14T21:28:02","date_gmt":"2018-08-14T11:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=215552"},"modified":"2020-07-28T15:05:38","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T05:05:38","slug":"students-explore-world-of-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2018\/08\/14\/students-explore-world-of-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Explore World Of Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_215553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-215553\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180814science1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-215553\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180814science1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180814science1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/20180814science1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-215553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Year 8 students Ciana Cummings, Teagan O&#8217;Sullivan and Jasmin Kemp with their entry in the tallest structure competition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>August 15, 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Mary Knoll Centre at St Mary&#8217;s Catholic College featured everything from zombies to lemons and potatoes &#8211; and even a chook &#8211; at the school&#8217;s second annual Science Fair on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The fair, held in conjunction with National Science Week, featured various science projects developed during the term by Year 7, 8 and 9 students.<\/p>\n<p>Maths \/ Science teacher Ron Johnston said\u00a0Year 12 students also put on a science show for Year 6s to introduce them to the idea of a Science Fair.<\/p>\n<p>Other primary school students weren&#8217;t forgotten either, with classes taking turns at visiting the hall and exploring the various displays.<\/p>\n<p>The science projects covered three main themes: Food Security (Year 7), Energy (Year 8) and Diseases (Year 9).<\/p>\n<p>Prizes were awarded for the best displays (see below).<\/p>\n<p>The overall winner was &#8220;Dome House&#8221;, built by two Year 8 students who even dressed formally as architects for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>While the judging was taking place, the Years 7-9 students were mastering two other challenges in the main body of the hall &#8230; how to build the biggest structure using just a set number of toothpicks and marshmallows, and how to build a bridge out of spaghetti.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>And the winners were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 7<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. Anatomy Of A Fish<br \/>\n2. Self-Watering Garden<br \/>\n3. The Humble Potato<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 8<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. Dome Home<br \/>\n2. Radiation &#8211; The Silent Killer<br \/>\n3. Sour Power<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. Kuru<br \/>\n2. Malaria<br \/>\n3.
