AgForce Queensland has welcomed the move by NAB to offer more financial flexibility for its rural customers, and urged other major lenders to follow suit.<\/p>\n

NAB CEO Andrew Thorburn announced on Monday night that the NAB would allow farmers to offset their Farm Management Deposits against their loans and would no longer charge penalty interest payments on farmers who fell into default on their loans.<\/p>\n

AgForce general president Grant Maudsley said Farm Management Deposits allowed farmers to set aside money from their pre-tax income during good years to later use during tough times.<\/p>\n

“AgForce first sought the introduction of offsets for Farm Management Deposits during the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper process in 2014, so we very much welcome this week’s announcement from Australia’s largest agri-lender, NAB,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Offsetting FMDs against other farm loans will enable producers to save on interest costs while also growing their resilience to business risks, including drought or market downturns.<\/p>\n

“NAB’s decision to no longer charge higher default interest rates on drought-affected farmers who are unable to make their loan repayments is also very welcome.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It is counterproductive and unfair for farmers who are struggling to meet repayments to then be hit by even higher charges, which often contributes to foreclosure actions being taken by the bank.<\/p>\n

“We congratulate NAB on the announcements they have made and urge other rural lenders to follow their lead.”<\/p>\n

The announcement by NAB follows a recent drought roundtable chaired by Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud and attended by the National Farmers’ Federation, State farming organisations including AgForce, and bank representatives.<\/p>\n

Until now only one bank, Rural Bank, had offered farmers the chance to use their FMD as an offset against their loan despite the Federal Government changing the law to allow it in 2016, and also doubling the amount a farmer could hold in their FMD to $800,000.<\/p>\n

\u201c(The NAB announcement) is fantastic news for Aussie farmers. One\u00a0in three farmers bank with NAB so this change has the potential to help a lot of families,” Mr Littleproud said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an investment in agriculture\u2019s future and farmers can now vote with their wallets. I hope other Aussie banks follow NAB\u2019s lead and get on board.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast week foreign-owned Rabo bank turned up its nose at Aussie farmers, ruling out an FMD offset product. You have to ask how serious that bank is about agriculture in Australia. It\u2019s fantastic an Aussie owned bank has shown a social conscience and led from the front.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re a farmer whose bank doesn\u2019t offer an FMD offset, you can tell them to bugger off because there are banks now which do.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also congratulate NAB on removing penalty interest when a farmer defaults on a payment during drought. I call for other banks to do the same.<\/p>\n

“But it\u2019s also an opportunity for the banking sector to reassess penalty interest as a whole because I don\u2019t think the charge truly reflects the cost to the bank. It\u2019s really a kick in the guts when someone\u2019s down, which isn\u2019t the Australian way.<\/p>\n

“Banks have an opportunity to improve their standing in the community and win back some social licence by reassessing these charges.<\/p>\n
