Students from Kingaroy and Murgon State High Schools learned about the hypothetical biology of zombies at the University of Queensland\u2019s free Experience Science program on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Over a period of four days, around 1000 high school students in years 10-12 were able to trial university life for a day through innovative, hands-on science workshops in disciplines ranging from cosmology to entomology.<\/p>\n

Thursday was Kingaroy and Murgon’s turn.<\/p>\n

Students matched soil types with the optimum crop, used biological analysis to find out what brain-eating zombies would look like in real life, and experimented with bioluminescent spinach.<\/p>\n

UQ’s Faculty of Science Executive Dean Prof. Melissa Brown said the event was an excellent opportunity for high school students to experience the wide variety of sciences on offer at the St Lucia campus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cUQ and industry experts who facilitate our workshops demonstrate how science can be applied in everyday life, and across different industries,\u201d Professor Brown said.<\/p>\n

“UQ Science offers an impressive range of study areas through its programs, and the Experience Science program provides a perfect platform for students to ask questions and discover where their interests truly lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

With over 60 disciplines and 26 different majors available in UQ\u2019s Bachelor of Science programs, the university says it offers the widest range of Science study options available in Queensland.<\/p>\n

The university will also be holding Open Days on August 5 and 19.<\/p>\n
