Stanwell Corporation will call for tenders later this year seeking companies interested in operating its Meandu coal mine at Tarong.<\/p>\n

The contract for the current operator, Downer,\u00a0expires in June 2020, however\u00a0it is expected to toss its hat into the ring again when the new tender is announced.<\/p>\n

Meandu Mine Site Manager Dan Redman said the energy market was undergoing a radical transformation and Stanwell\u2019s primary focus was to ensure the long-term future of the Tarong power stations.<\/p>\n

“As with any business, it is good practice to regularly review supply agreements,” Mr Redman said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“A new agreement will help ensure Meandu maintains an efficient and competitive operation that enables the site to continue to provide local jobs and regional investment in the South Burnett for many years to come.<\/p>\n

“As one of the largest employers in the South Burnett, Stanwell remains focussed on the safety and long-term well-being of its people and community and it is business as usual on site.”<\/p>\n

A key requirement of the tender will be a commitment to employ local people, including trainees and apprenticeships, indigenous employment and inclusivity.<\/p>\n

Stanwell – and its predecessor Tarong Energy – have owned Meandu Mine since 2008 when the government corporation took control from Rio Tinto Coal.<\/p>\n

Stanwell originally partnered with Thiess to operate the mine, with Downer taking over in January 2013.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
