The State Government has revealed plans for a new combination on the state\u2019s number plates when the current series runs out.<\/p>\n

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the future of Queensland number plates was a hot topic of conversation among number plate enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

\u201cQueensland\u2019s current motor vehicle number plate series, which includes a combination of three numbers followed by three letters, is coming to an end after 40 years in production,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current plate series started in 1977 and changed colour back in 2001.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy department has started issuing Y series plates and we expect the Z series will start being issued next year and run into early 2020.”<\/p>\n

Mr Bailey said motor vehicle use was increasing in line with population growth and was expected to reach 635,000 sets by 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTransport and Main Roads has been working on a solution for some time and has developed a new combination for the future,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new plates will feature three numbers followed by two letters and a further number (eg. 456-BZ8).<\/p>\n

\u201cThis format meets regulatory requirements and will be unique to Queensland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Bailey said security was also a key consideration during design of the new number plates.<\/p>\n

\u201cA unique directional security mark is one of the design features being considered for inclusion on the new plates,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis would create a level of authentication not seen before in Queensland.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis feature can be seen during the day and at night and will assist authorities to verify genuine number plates.\u201d<\/p>\n
