The South Burnett Regional Council says waste charges will rise in this year’s Budget, which is due to be handed down on Monday, June 25.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Mayor Keith Campbell said increased costs would see rises in both the service usage cost and the Council\u2019s Waste Management Levy next financial year.<\/p>\n

He said the true cost of the State Government\u2019s Waste Disposal Levy on the Council\u2019s operations had yet to be determined.<\/p>\n

The levy, which is due to be reintroduced in the first quarter of 2019, will lead to 38 of Queensland’s 77 councils hit with a $70-per-tonne fee for all waste going into landfill.<\/p>\n

This fee is forecast to rise by $5 per year until it reaches $90 per tonne.<\/p>\n

Mayor Campbell said the levy should not impact kerbside waste collection services because the State Government had advised affected councils they would be reimbursed for this.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, we are unsure at this time if this reimbursement will cover waste that residents take to transfer stations in rural areas, or the additional costs associated with Council administrating the state\u2019s waste levy scheme.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad promised that ordinary Queenslanders would not be hit with extra costs because of the reintroduction of the Waste Levy.<\/p>\n
