Cooyar’s new waste transfer station will open on Monday (June 25), part of a $9.8 million investment by Toowoomba Regional Council into its regional waste facilities.<\/p>\n

Cr Nancy Sommerfield said Cooyar, Evergreen and Cecil Plains have all benefitted from substantial upgrades.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year we introduced a new Waste Management Strategy which placed a strong focus on Council\u2019s commitment to our regional areas,\u201d Cr Sommerfield said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvergreen, Cooyar and Cecil Plains were all identified as being near capacity and as such, operations would not be able to continue without these upgrades.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunity consultation supported the proposed locations, with residents underlining the importance of having facilities that were part of an integrated network, took future growth of the community into account and diverted waste from landfill.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new facilities have been designed based on the award-winning Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility and will not only provide significant operational savings, but importantly, will help slash waste and increase recycling and product recovery that benefits the entire community.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn its first year of operation more than 79 per cent of all waste disposed of at the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility was diverted from landfill.<\/p>\n

“We are expecting similar results at these new facilities.<\/p>\n

“The facility design is supporting our customers in their decisions to divert more from landfill.<\/p>\n

\u201cBuilding on old landfill sites with buried waste can lead to a lot of issues and is generally the last option we would take. ”<\/p>\n

The transition from an outdated landfill to a transfer station removes a number of potential environmental risks and will reduce waste to landfill.”<\/p>\n

The Cooyar Waste Transfer facility on Cooyar-Mt Binga Road will be open daily from 8:30am to 4:00pm.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Residents will need a PIN to both enter and leave the facility.\u00a0The site will be staffed for a few weeks after opening to help people with using the new facility.<\/p>\n
