A family fun day was held at the Murgon Lions Park on Sunday to mark the official opening of a new $33,000 car park.<\/p>\n

The park, which is tucked in beside Murgon Golf Club, was developed by the club about four decades ago and has been steadily improved over the years with the addition of playground equipment, picnic tables and a toilet block.<\/p>\n

The latest additions – a bitumen seal of the car park area, drainage improvements and the creation of a garden bed – were completed by local company, Sanders Bobcat and Mini Excavator Hire, and paid for by the South Burnett Regional Council.<\/p>\n

The car park area has suffered flooding over the years from water pooling near the entrance during heavy rain, and it is hoped the latest drainage work will fix this long-standing problem.<\/p>\n

Rocks were relocated from the Murgon Skate Park to create a retaining wall around the new car park.<\/p>\n

This allowed for the creation of a garden bed where Murgon Business and Development Association president Leo Geraghty has promised to create a floral display.<\/p>\n

Also unveiled on Sunday morning was the Murgon Lions Club’s new $60,000 food van, which was purchased through fundraising by the club and grants from the Federal Government and Gambling Community Benefit Fund.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Club secretary Bevan Routledge said one of the club’s future projects would be to raise funds to spruce up the playground equipment.<\/p>\n

The latest upgrades are part of Murgon Lions’ celebration of 100 years of “Lionism” worldwide, a celebration that extended across 2017-18.<\/p>\n

A plaque to mark 100 years of Lions serving the community has been erected on a standing stone in the park.<\/p>\n
