Murgon is getting ready for a huge day of rugby league action on Saturday to help raise awareness about domestic violence in the region.<\/p>\n

Murgon Junior Rugby League – in conjunction with the South Burnett Rugby League, Uniting Care Community, Stanwell and the State Government – are hosting the second Domestic Violence Awareness Shield at Murgon Showgrounds.<\/p>\n

This free event will involve South Burnett teams playing across six fields.<\/p>\n

Juniors – U6s, U8s, U10s and U12s – will play in the morning from 8:00am.<\/p>\n

There’ll also be free amusement rides, face painting and NRL legends on hand to help entertain the kids.<\/p>\n

The inaugural “Stanwell 9\u2019s” will be held in the afternoon, a round-robin competition involving A Grade teams from Cherbourg, Murgon, Wondai and Kingaroy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first round will kick off at 1:30pm, with the Grand Final at 5:00pm.<\/p>\n

As well, the South Burnett Under 18 Eagles will play the Warwick Cowboys at 2:30pm, and the South Burnett U16 girls will play Hervey Bay at 3:45pm.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cViolence against women is at epidemic proportions. On average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of intimate partner violence,\u201d Murgon JRL spokesman Cole Cooper said.<\/p>\n

Cole said the Murgon club had bought together a number of organisations to assist in raising awareness about domestic violence, including representatives from the Mudjimba Safe House and the NRL’s Voice Against Violence Program.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be plenty of activities, refreshments and food available on the day while the future stars, and current champions, compete,\u201d Cole said.<\/p>\n

The day is alcohol-free.<\/p>\n

Action from last Saturday’s high-scoring Nanango v Murgon A Grade game played at Nanango:<\/strong><\/p>\n

At half-time, Nanango led 24-16 but the Stags romped away to win 46-30.<\/p>\n

In the other senior game played at the weekend, Cherbourg 46 defeated Kingaroy 36 under lights at Nanango.\u00a0At half-time, the Hornets led 22-8.<\/p>\n
