South Burnett Toastmasters club hosted its first ever “Showcase” event at the weekend, with speakers coming from six clubs to share tall tales and true on stage.<\/p>\n

The “showcase” is a purely social competition, unlike the more serious District competitions which have been held in the South Burnett in the past, which meant there were lots of laughs for everyone to share.<\/p>\n

It was held on Saturday at the Uniting Church Hall in Murgon.<\/p>\n

Murgon was chosen as the venue because it was central to where the speakers were travelling from, which included the Cooloola Coast, Maryborough and Gympie.<\/p>\n

Six speakers – one from each club – competed in three competitions: Novice Speaker, Tall Tales, and Interpretative Reading.<\/p>\n

The Novice competition was for speakers with no more than six speeches made at club level.\u00a0Winners were:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. April Spadina (Maryborough)
\n2. Sue Tankey (WEBLEC – Maryborough)
\n3. Stephen Maurer (G’Day – Maryborough)<\/p>\n

The Tall Tales contest was open to all members, but the tales must NOT be true:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Rod Morgan (South Burnett) – “Live Happily Ever After”
\n2. Zela Bissett (Gympie Goaldiggers) – “The Writing Elves”
\n3. Lyn Pryor (Maryborough) – “A Fishy Tale”<\/p>\n

Interpretative Reading (reading a passage written by another author):<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Bettina Stewart (South Burnett)
\n2. Kate Niblett (Maryborough)
\n3. Joy Snedden (G’Day – Maryborough)<\/p>\n

Sponsors for the event included the Go Getta Girls running club, Janice Gallen, Just Aus Garlic, Marietta Wetzig, Moffatdale Ridge Wines, Murgon Bakery, Murgon Betta Home Living, Murgon Visitor Information Centre, Nanango Country Vets, Swickers Kingaroy, The Coffee Bar 4605, and The Peanut Van.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Toastmasters meet at 7:00pm of the 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursday at Kingaroy RSL Club’s Anzac Room.<\/p>\n
